In 2021, the MurthyNAYAK Foundation (MNF) launched a new media project – the online photography resource PhotoSouthAsia. The site showcases photographers working in South Asia, their portfolios and statements, as well as our exclusive interviews with them. The site also carries original essays and is where grants from the MurthyNAYAK Foundation for photo-related projects will be announced.

Encouragement and financial support are important to artists who have the talent and the courage to hold a magnifying glass before unpleasantness and a mirror to the face of society. By funding specific projects of photographers, MNF aims to highlight important issues, transforming ignorance and apathy into concern and action. If a picture was once worth a thousand words, film and social media have increased that exponentially. It is our goal to support emerging artists producing socially relevant work that will raise awareness, sustain involvement, and ignite social change. In order to make the most effective use of MNF’s resources, grant making focuses on specific, short-term projects. (MNF has a 501(c)(3) designation in the U.S.)

Immigrants

940 360 mnf

There are many influences that might drive one to leave his or her homeland. Some leave out of fear, persecution, or desperation; others with high hopes and big dreams. Some aren’t leaving their own countries as much as they are coming TO the United States; to the country about which they have heard so many wonderful things. But life in this new country can be more difficult than expected. The culture is so different – the language and dialects confusing. The cost of the immigration process is high. It is lonely and strange and if one’s family – one’s support system – is all back home, it can seem hopeless at times. The MurthyNAYAK Foundation works with organizations in the United States that support immigrants enduring setbacks and hardship. They help women who have been abandoned by husbands – without income or legal status. Sometimes it takes so little to help a person regain her/his footing and become a stable, contributing member of American society.

Women

940 360 mnf

There are women around the world for whom feeding and educating their children, as well as themselves, is an ongoing struggle. An illiterate mother has a more difficult time caring for her family, because, in addition to her own limitations, there are many who recognize and prey on her vulnerability, cheating her out of the little she can earn. A literate mother reads to her children and can help them with their studies, meeting their potential, improving their opportunities and those for the family. By investing in women’s education and entrepreneurship, in protecting their legal rights and protecting many from abusive intimate partners, the MurthyNAYAK Foundation works with some excellent organizations that are making a difference. By helping women, we help families, and by helping families we provide hope. Providing hope helps in building the future, not just for some people – for everyone.

Children

960 360 mnf

Children are hope for the future. But the future should include ALL children. None should be relegated to the sidelines, only watching while others partake in the promise of a better tomorrow. Therefore, all children must be educated. A child with an empty belly cannot be expected to focus on schoolwork. So, provide each child with a simple, nutritious breakfast and a midday meal. Once the distraction of hunger pangs is removed, children begin to learn, to engage in the world around them, to thrive. The MurthyNAYAK Foundation partners with select nonprofit organizations and NGOs, whose goals dovetails with our own. Together we work to build a better future by investing in the world’s children.

The MurthyNayak FOUNDATION (MNF) is an independent, nonprofit, non-governmental organization established by Sheela Murthy and Vasant Nayak, to locate and help with a range of projects in India and the United States.

In order to make the most effective use of MNF’s resources, grant making is focused and structured as follows. In general, MNF seeks to help with children’s and women’s health and educational needs, to support programs that assist immigrants, educate and advocate for immigration, and support disaster relief efforts. In India, MNF intends to further adult education and literacy, to support orphanages and old-age homes, and to offer education scholarships.

I slept and dreamt that life was joy.
I awoke and saw that life was service.
I acted and behold, service was joy.

Murthy Law Firm

The Murthy Law Firm represents individuals and businesses exclusively in the area of U.S. immigration law. The Baltimore / Washington metropolitan area has provided the firm with a source for talented, intelligent, energetic employees who have helped us to build a business that has been able to grow and strengthen since 1994. We have benefited from the camaraderie of the business community here, while our clients are located around the globe.

The Murthy Law Firm is a business, but a business, like a living being, needs to metabolize all it takes in to achieve strength and health and balance. If it is all brain and no heart it can survive no better than if it is all heart and no brain. The MurthyNAYAK Foundation is the heart of the Murthy Law Firm, offering support to the most vulnerable members of society, from Baltimore to Bangalore. It is through financial gifts from the Murthy Law Firm that the foundation is able to do its work.

We encourage Murthy Law Firm staff to give back to the community in their own ways and we follow the path, as well, as individuals and as an organization, donating our time, talent, and treasure when and where we can serve others.

Who We Support

The MurthyNAYAK Foundation is proud to support a wide range of organizations that share our goals and our commitment to public-spirited good works.  We choose our partner organizations carefully, targeting our social investments for maximum impact.  We look for organizations that have the capacity to make substantial improvements within our communities of interest.  We prefer to invest for the long term, in path-breaking programs and ideas that will make our world a better place.  The MurthyNAYAK Foundation does this by building relationships with committed social entrepreneurs — creative people whose work attacks systemic problems at their roots; we strongly favor programs that promote basic justice and human dignity, empowering the needy with a hand up, not a handout.  The organizations listed below have become regular recipients of our support.

Women and Children

Women should have equal rights and protections under the law. Children should not be the victims of crime or suffer for their ethnicity or for the political views or wrongdoing of their parents. We do not live in a just or reasonable world, however. MNF supports organizations with the goal of protecting women who are the victims of domestic violence or who need help providing the basic needs of life to their families. We also provide assistance through organizations that feed and nurture the bodies and minds of children.

If a business is all brain and no heart it can survive no better than if it is all heart and no brain. The MurthyNayak FOUNDATION is the heart of the Murthy Law Firm, following its heart and helping those who are vulnerable or in need. Business has been generous and provided a certain amount of financial security, so we might set out to extend opportunities and open doors for those less fortunate, who share our planet.

When we have been successful in business, we believe it is our duty to be generous to the community and give back. Community Service enhances our business life. It keeps us in touch with the real world and with people from all economic, social, ethnic, and religious groups. This provides balance and informs the decisions we make in business and as part of our local and global communities. We at the MurthyNayak FOUNDATION challenge other business leaders and entrepreneurs to engaged themselves in community service in a meaningful way. We believe they, too, will feel rewarded.
