The American Immigration Council (AIC, formerly AILF, the American Immigration Law Foundation) is a nonprofit organization that promotes the prosperity and diversity of our nation by educating people about the enduring benefits of immigration, and by preserving a legal framework that will help America continue to be a nation of immigrants. The MurthyNAYAK Foundation supports the work of AIC through annual financial contributions and participation in its work. Attorney Sheela Murthy has served in as an advisor to this influential organization, and is a trustee emerita of AIC.

AIC’s legal advocacy arm, the Legal Action Center, litigates important test cases on immigration issues of vital interest to the just administration of our immigration laws, and files amicus curiae briefs in cases of special significance. It also provides information resources for legal professionals involved in immigration litigation and works with a coalition of lawyers and immigrant rights advocates to promote the just and fair administration of our immigration laws.

AIC also works to educate the public about immigration issues, and seeks to dispel popular misconceptions through its Community Education Center, highlighting the contributions of immigrants to the rich diversity of our society. AIC provides authoritative research and analysis on the public policy of immigration through its Immigration Policy Center, and sponsors international exchange visitors to the United States through an internship and training program.

Our Interest in Media

In 2021, the MurthyNAYAK Foundation (MNF) launched a new media project – the online photography resource PhotoSouthAsia. The site showcases photographers working in South Asia, their portfolios and statements, as well as our exclusive interviews with them. The site also carries original essays and is where grants from the MurthyNAYAK Foundation for photo-related projects will be announced.

Encouragement and financial support are important to artists who have the talent and the courage to hold a magnifying glass before unpleasantness and a mirror to the face of society. By funding specific projects of photographers, MNF aims to highlight important issues, transforming ignorance and apathy into concern and action. If a picture was once worth a thousand words, film and social media have increased that exponentially. It is our goal to support emerging artists producing socially relevant work that will raise awareness, sustain involvement, and ignite social change. In order to make the most effective use of MNF’s resources, grant making focuses on specific, short-term projects. (MNF has a 501(c)(3) designation in the U.S.)

United Way

United Way of America (now United Way Worldwide) based in Alexandria, Virginia, is a nonprofit organization that works with almost 1,200 local United Way offices throughout the country in a coalition of charitable organizations to pool efforts in fundraising and support. United Way’s focus is to identify and resolve important community issues and to make measurable, sustainable changes in communities through partnerships with schools, government agencies, businesses, organized labor, financial institutions, community development corporations, voluntary and neighborhood associations, the faith community, and others. The main areas of focus include education, income, and health, which aligns with the mission of the MurthyNAYAK Foundation – a longtime supporter.

United Way identifies and builds on community strengths and assets, helps individuals and groups with specific community interests find ways to contribute their time and talents, supports direct-service programs and community-change efforts, and advocates public-policy changes. All of this is done in collaboration with diverse partners. Depending on the issue and how the community chooses to address it, United Way coordinates with schools, government agencies, businesses, organized labor, financial institutions, community development corporations, voluntary and neighborhood associations, the religious community, and others.

Tahirih Justice Center

Tahirih Justice Center is a national nonprofit that has served more than 22,000 courageous individuals fleeing violence since 1997. The organization utilizes an efficient, effective, and innovative model to serve as many immigrant women and girls as possible.

Tahirih Justice Center strives to protect brave immigrant women and girls who refuse to be victims of violence. By elevating their voices in communities, courts, and Congress, the organization is creating a world where all women and girls enjoy equality and live in safety and with dignity. This is a world the MurthyNAYAK Foundation would like to help build, which is why we support Tahirih Justice Center.

Tahirih Justice Center stands alone as the only national, multi-city organization providing a broad range of direct legal services, policy advocacy, and training and education to protect immigrant women and girls fleeing gender-based violence.

Ronald McDonald Foundation

Since 1974, Ronald McDonald House Charities, or RMHC, has created programs that strengthen families during difficult times. RMHC provides vital resources and compassionate care to children and their families who are being served by leading hospitals worldwide. Core RMHC programs, including — Ronald McDonald Houses, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, and Ronald McDonald Care Mobile — provide access to health services, and enable family-centered care. RMHC helped ease the burden for more than 5.5 million families in 2016. Employees of the Murthy Law Firm were actively involved in fundraisers for RMHC, which introduced the MurthyNAYAK Foundation to the important support they provide for these families.

Many families travel far from home and spend several weeks or months to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children. That is a long time to be away from home, possibly separated from the rest of the family. And, for these children, nothing seems scarier than facing a serious medical crisis without mom and dad close by for love and support. A Ronald McDonald House is that “home-away-from-home,” which allows a family to remain close to their hospitalized child at little or no cost.

Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Service

For more than seven decades, the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service has been a champion for migrants and refugees from all over the globe. The group’s legacy of courageous and compassionate service has made a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people who have sought safety and hope in America’s communities. The MurthyNAYAK Foundation understands that the United States is a beacon of hope for many living in dire situations around the world. Because families and immigrants are central to our mission, we partner with LIRS in support of the relief they provide.

LIRS works with migrants and refugees, U.S. Lutherans, and a wide array of partners in service and justice to accomplish its mission. Refugees are resettled through a network of local organizations in multiple states, most of which are Lutheran social ministry organizations. Many of those organizations also provide immigration legal services. Asylum seekers, survivors of torture, and other migrants impacted by detention are served through partners providing legal and social services including visitation ministry. In addition, LIRS works directly with foster care programs at the state level to provide family reunification and foster care services for unaccompanied refugee and immigrant minors.

Jhpiego works with health experts, governments and community leaders to provide high-quality health care for their people. Jhpiego develops strategies to help countries create a culture of care for themselves by training competent health care workers, strengthening health care systems, and improving delivery of care. Innovative, effective, and low-cost health care solutions are designed to ensure a high level of care for women and their families. These practical, evidence-based interventions are breaking down barriers to high-quality health care for the world’s most vulnerable populations.

Mission and Values

Jhpiego is dedicated to improving the health of women and families in developing countries.

From its origins as technical experts in reproductive, maternal, and child health, Jhpiego has evolved to embrace new challenges, including HIV/AIDS, malaria, and cervical cancer prevention and urban health – reflecting the increasing interconnectedness of global health. Jhpiego takes the latest advances in science and technology, applies that knowledge to develop practical, low-cost health care solutions, and makes them available from home to hospital, village to city.

Jhpiego assists countries confronting and addressing health needs for women and their families. Jhpiego accomplishes this by educating and preparing frontline health workers with evidence-based skills and techniques to deliver quality health care. Jhpiego believes that, because many people cannot reach needed services easily and expeditiously, health care should be mobile and made available to people where they live and in their communities.

To meet that need, Jhpiego designs and implements effective, low-cost, hands-on solutions that can be delivered by a community health care worker in a home or by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital. Jhpiego supports and works to develop integrated treatment services and health interventions for a variety of illnesses, so women and families can be treated for several conditions in a convenient place at one time.

Homeless Persons Representation Project

Homeless Persons Representation Project, Inc. (HPRP), is Maryland’s only legal services and advocacy organization committed to eliminating homelessness. HPRP’s dedicated staff and volunteers provide free legal services, including advice, counsel, education, representation and advocacy, for low-income persons who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Pursuing long term, systemic solutions to homelessness is also a critical part of HPRP’s work. The MurthyNAYAK Foundation partners with HPRP because homelessness is a human tragedy anyone of us could face, given only slightly different circumstances.

HPRP’s staff and volunteers deliver legal services through outreach in shelters, soup kitchens, welfare offices, community centers, and the street. The group’s practice areas are listed below.

Access to Public Benefits Project

HPRP represents families and individuals in efforts to obtain and preserve state disability, welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, veterans’, and other benefits. By increasing access to public benefits, people can meet their basic human needs of food, health, and adequate shelter. Greater income security also creates more economic activity in the communities where people live.

Veterans Legal Assistance Project

The Veterans Legal Assistance Project (VLAP) is a component of HPRP’s Access to Public Benefits Project. VLAP helps veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless obtain critical VA disability benefits, a variety of other federal and state disability benefits, and discharge upgrades. VLAP operates a legal clinic twice-monthly at the VA Medical Center in downtown Baltimore as well as rotating legal clinics in rural counties.

Homeless Youth Initiative

The Homeless Youth Initiative provides outreach, legal representation, and advocacy for and with homeless youth, ages 13 to 25, who do not have access to a parent or guardian in Baltimore City. The initiative operates two community-based legal clinics, one at a youth shelter and the other at a youth drop-in center. Legal representation is provided in the areas of public benefits, housing, and expungement of criminal records.

Housing Justice Project

Preventing and ending homelessness are core components of HPRP’s programs. In the Housing Justice Project, HPRP attorneys represent tenants of federally subsidized housing in court eviction proceedings and in administrative hearings with the Housing Authority of Baltimore City to prevent homelessness. For persons already homeless, HPRP attorneys represent families and individuals in their endeavors to access or preserve shelter and housing.

Reducing Barriers to Housing and Employment Imposed by Criminal Records Project

HPRP attorneys and volunteers represent homeless people in proceedings to expunge records of charges that result in non-convictions or convictions for minor, nonviolent offenses, advocate for expansion of statutory eligibility for expungement, and urge housing providers and employers to provide opportunity and access.

Women’s Law Center

The Women’s Law Center of Maryland was established in 1971 to address the legal needs of women, particularly in the areas of family law and in the workplace. Through impact litigation and public education, the group’s founders hoped to eliminate discrimination and unfair practices. Although the issues have changed, the group’s vision remains the same – a legal system that provides justice and fairness for women. This is a view that the MurthyNAYAK Foundation can get behind, too, which is why we are long-time partners.

The Women’s Law Center is overseen by the dedicated members of a volunteer Board.   The organization’s mission and services are supported by members and financial contributors.  Its diverse membership includes women and men from all walks of life, including lawyers and non-lawyers. Staff members provide representation to individual clients, answer hotlines to educate individuals about their rights and engage in advocacy efforts to accomplish systemic change.
